Older Philippines Stamps - New Philippines Stamps The first Philippines stamps were issued in 1854 and have a rich history of philatelic achievement . Spanish stamps dominated until the American takeover of the Philippines and Philippines Philately in 1899. The United States made the Philippines into a commonwealth country and Philippine stamps were issued under U.S. auspices until 1946. Japanese stamps were issued for the Philippines during World War II Occupation and upon liberation the promised independence of Philippines was granted by the United States in 1946. Philippine Republic stamps from the early era still showed American theme subjects but during the 1960’s Philippine stamps started to show local subjects and topics. Philippine stamp collecting has grown and the prices of Philippine stamps have increased every decade since the 1960’s. Today Philippine stamps are widely collected for their topical appeal and also for their difficulty in finding. There are no stamp agents for Philippine stamps and while Philippine stamp dealers stock recent issues, American and European stamp dealers generally do not have good stocks of Philippine stamps. Herrick Stamp Company has a somewhat large stock of Philippine stamps as we like to handle non-agency stamp issues for our own inventory.
