Croatia Mint Stamps - Croatia Used Stamps - Croatia Newest Stamps The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the close of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent Communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of often bitter fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Modern philately started in 1991 with series of in expensive Croatian new issue stamps. Some of these quickly increased in value. Thereafter, there was continued interest in Croatian stamps, especially Europa theme issues. Stamp designs are local in nature for the most part and face values are low. There is no attempt to gain funds from philatelic sales and stamps are freely available. 1941 WWII stamps exist but they are not as popular as the more recent issues. If you want a challenge, try collecting the Postal Tax stamps. These are inexpensive but hard to obtain as they were distributed via the Croatian Red Cross rather than through the Post Office.
