Named in 1643 for the day of its discovery, the island was annexed and settlement began by the UK in 1888. Phosphate mining began in the 1890s. The UK transferred sovereignty to Australia in 1958. Almost two-thirds of the island has been declared a national park.
Stamps of Christmas Island ( Along with Cocos Island stamps) are among the most popular in Australia area philately. The first stamp issues were in 1958 and early issues up to 1969 are the “classic” Christmas Island stamp era and are in steady demand.
From 1972 thru 1987 there was tremendous collector interest in Christmas Island stamps and dealers stocked this country heavily. This ended when stamp collectors turned their interests elsewhere and thus stamps from 1988 to date are in short supply due to lack of dealer stocks. Starting in 1993 Christmas Island stamps became valid for postage in Australia and this has lead to increased interest.
Nice stamp designs such as Christmas Island Scott #369 , the Golf topical stamp and annual productions for Zodiac New Year celebrations have brought more collectors back to Christmas Island philately.
