Cayman Island Mint Stamps - Cayman Islands Used Stamps - Cayman Islands Newest Stamps The Cayman Islands were colonized from Jamaica by the British during the 18th & 19th centuries and were administered by Jamaica after 1863. In 1959, the islands became a territory within the Federation of the West Indies. When the Federation dissolved in 1962, the Cayman Islands chose to remain a British dependency. Queen Victoria was on the first Cayman Islands stamp in 1900. Topical stamps for turtles, sailing, parrots and international topics are predominant in Cayman Islands stamps. Of all the British Commonwealth Islands in the Caribbean we think Cayman is the most interesting to collect. Their stamps are attractive, not overproduced, and not over speculated in. Stamps always have some connection to Cayman and wildlife of turtles, lizards, butterflies, rays are featured on well designed stamps. Crown Agents in England still control stamp production and design and they have done a wonderful job of limiting issues with real Cayman context and yet contemporary design. Face values are limited and new issues are easy to obtain. Do not overlook the 1917 War Tax Surcharge Scott #MR3. It is a scarce stamp, rare in never hinged condition and often misidentified by collectors. A certificate is recommended for this stamp.
