The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century; Cape Verde subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Cape Verde continues to exhibit one of Africa's most stable democratic governments. Repeated droughts during the second half of the 20th century caused significant hardship and prompted heavy emigration. As a result, Cape Verde's expatriate population is greater than its domestic one.

Cape Verde stamps were first issued in 1877 and a limited stamp issuing policy has been followed until quite recently. Stamps of the last thirty years have a limited demand except for the topical issues which are in short supply. Domestic animal stamps, bird stamps, soccer cup stamps, fish stamps and butterfly stamps exist from Cape Verde but not in sufficient quantity to meet the growing international demand for these thematic stamps.

Lighthouse stamps are among the most popular worldwide and the 2004 Cape Verde Lighthouse set is in very short supply.
