British Honduras Mint Stamps – British Honduras King George VI Stamps – 19th Century British Honduras Stamps British Honduras was the site of several Mayan city states until their decline at the end of the first millennium A.D. The British and Spanish disputed the region in the 17th and 18th centuries; it formally became the colony in 1854. The first British Honduras stamps were issued in 1866 and are notable for their high quality and small margins. These stamps were printed very closely together and well-centered early British Honduras stamps are extremely scarce. The most popular issue is the 1938 King George VI set complete to the $5.00 which is one of the most beautiful and well designed of all British Commonwealth King George VI stamps. The 1949 St. George Cay ship set is also popular but was bought very heavily by dealers in the postwar era and is relatively common. 1953 Queen Elizabeth II definitive is very popular as are the attractive bird, fish and hardwood tree stamp issues. British Honduras stamps were superseded in 1973 by issues of Belize. |
