Bahrain Mint Stamps - Bahrain Used Stamps - Bahrain Newest Stamps In 1783, the al-Khalifa family captured Bahrain from the Persians. In order to secure these holdings, it entered into a series of treaties with the UK during the 19th century that made Bahrain a British protectorate. The archipelago attained its independence in 1971. Facing declining oil reserves, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking center. The first Bahrain stamps were 1933 overprints on India King George V stamps and have proven to be popular and expensive. Six stamps featuring a local ruler appeared in 1953 but Scott’s has failed to list these. The first independent states issues of 1971 are among the most desirable. Strong philatelic interests from Gulf States stamp buyers and attractive topical stamps from Bahrain for birds, animals and international topics have led to strong prices for Bahrain stamps. Stamp dealers have very poor stocks of Bahrain and supplies are limited. Prices for Bahrain stamps have been rising steadily for the past ten years.
